"Page X of Y" in a word doc footer doesn't print

After inserting the autotext "page X of Y" into a footer, the correct page
numbering shows on screen but when printed I get "Page 1 of 1", "page 2 of 2"
etc. I have had this problem years ago, and do not have it on all PCs I use.
How do I fix this problem?

The article specifically talks about SR1 for Office 2000. Am I correct to
think that upgrading to Office 2003 would also solve the problem, or is this
something residual in all versions of Winword?

The MVPs article hasn't been updated for a while. This is a
long-running problem in multiple versions of Word. It first appeared
in Word 97, recurred in Word 2000 (base release), was fixed in Word
2000 SR1, broken again in Word 2000 SP3 and fixed with a hotfix,
reappeared in Word 2002 SP2 and fixed with a hotfix, and is now being
reported occasionally in Word 2003.

A search on Google with the search string

numpages incorrect site:support.microsoft.com

turns up KnowledgeBase articles about all these except the latest.

You just remove background printing option from the words File--> Print-->
Option--> remove checkbox of -Background Printing.

Then try to print the document. It will work as page x of y
