Page numbering with Section Breaks

Somebody please tell me how to use page numbering in a document with
sections.....I have tried following the directions in HELP to a "T" but
cannot get the numbers off the first section! The first section needs NO
page numbers. The other sections do. I add the section breaks, go to the
second section and insert the page numbers but they are automatically put in
the first section. I delete them from the first section and the are also
deleted in the second section.

Go to the second section in your document. In Print Layout view, double-click
the header or footer where your page number is located. You will see small
text saying "Same as previous" above the header or footer where the page
number is found, indicating that the header or footer is linked to the
previous section (that is why both sections change no matter what you do).
You need to break that link by clicking the "Link to previous" icon in the
“Header and Footer†toolbar (no. 5 command from the right). Then go to the
first section and delete the page number.

Thanks, this works. Can you tell me how to get the page number of each
section to show up or do I have to manually modify each section?? (Ex.: I
have 20 sections. The first section needs no page numbering, Section 2 has
15 pages and I want them to show with page numbers 1 - 15. Section 3 has 8
pages and I want them to show with page numbers 1 - 8.)

You need to modify the page number in each section (you can use the "Show
Previous" and "Show Next" icons in the "Header and Footer" toolbar to move
from one section to another).

See "Big Idea #4" in the following article for a description of how to set
the page number to start at 1 in each section:
