Page numbering in Word 2007

Every time I insert page numbering in my document, the numbering is wrong. It
assigns the first page the number 2. Then about half way throgh the document
the numbering starts over. I am unable to get it to number the pages
1,2,3,4....correctly. What am I doing wrong?

On the first page of the document, double-click the header to activate the
header/footer area. On the Header & Footer Tools Design tab, click Page
Number, and then click Format Page Numbers. In the Page Number Format dialog
box, make sure to choose "Continue from previous section" and click OK.

If that option has already been selected, do the following: On the Page
Layout tab of the ribbon, click the dialog launcher button in the Page Setup
group (the little arrow on the bottom right). On the Layout tab of the
dialog box, make sure that "Section start" is "New page." Click OK.

On the page where page numbering restarts, activate the header/footer area
as described above, and display the Page Number Format dialog box. Again,
choose "Continue from previous section," and click OK.

That helped. Now page one is numbered 1, but on page 5 there is no number and
then on page 6 it starts over with the number 1

Since a newly inserted section inherits the properties of the previous
section you may have to fix the numbering for page 5--6 too (as described in
my previous message).

Also, note that each section can have up to three different headers (and
footers), namely, if the "Different First Page" and "Different Odd & Even
Pages" options are both checked on the Header & Footer Tools Design tab. In
particular, if "Different first page" is checked, that explains why you
cannot see the page number in that section. You can clear that option on the
Header & Footer Tools Design tab. Alternatively, you can copy the page
number as well as any other contents of another header (or footer) into the
first page header.
