I cannot insert page numbers. I go to insert/page numbers/format page
numbers/Current position with my cursor in the header on right side or
middle and it does not insert a page number. I must be doing something
wrong. In Word 2007 or Word 00-03

When you select Current Position, you should get a gallery. Which selection
are you choosing from the gallery?

You might find it simpler to press CTRL+F9 and type Page between the
resulting brackets. Then F9 and ALT+F9 to update.

When I follow your instructions I do not get the gallery. The gallery is
grayed out. I prefer to use your suggestion as it seems intuitive. However
the suggestion following yours did work, now if I can remember it all the
time.

If you're not getting a gallery, then your Building Blocks.dotx file may be
damaged (do you see a gallery if you choose Top of Page, Bottom of Page, or
Page Margins?). The KB article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925175 may
be helpful. In addition to inserting a PAGE field by hand, you can also use
Insert | Text | Quick Parts | Field: Page.

But, rereading your original post, you say you are going to "insert/page
numbers/format page numbers/Current position." There is no such path. Under
Insert | Page Number, Current Position and Format Page Numbers are separate
choices, and Current Position would be the only one that would display a
gallery.
