page file usage

Hi all, I have 64bit Premium and 4GB RAM.

I'm having problems with a certain game (oblivion) keep crashing, and on
their forum posted the dxdiag details on their request.

It showed,

Memory: 4094MB RAM
Page File: 1350MB used, 6993MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 10
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 6.00.6000.16386 32bit Unicode

and I was advised that my page file usage is high, even by Vista standards.
I was pointed to the MS knowledgebase article where it shows you how to clean
boot your PC, this time Dxdiag showed

Memory: 4094MB RAM
Page File: 1299MB used, 7044MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 10
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 6.00.6000.16386 32bit Unicode

Is this usage/file size too high?

thanks

Phil

Running Everest Ultimate, on its memory page it tells me I have the following.

----------------------------
Physical Memory
Total 4093 MB
Used 1058 MB
Free 3034 MB
Utilization 26 %

Swap Space
Total 8344 MB
Used 987 MB
Free 7356 MB

Virtual Memory
Total 12437 MB
Used 2040 MB
Free 10397 MB
Utilization 16 %

Paging File
Paging File C:\pagefile.sys
Current Size 4393 MB

Physical Address Extension (PAE)
Supported by Operating System Yes
Supported by CPU Yes
Active Yes

-----------------------------

I presume the Virtual Memory: 12437 MB is referring to the sum of the
Physical and the swap.

But in addition to this, Everest also tells me I have a page file.

I always thought a swap partition/file and a paging file did/were the same
thing?

I run dxdiag and am told

-----------------------------------

Memory: 4094MB RAM
Page File: 1299MB used, 7044MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 10
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 6.00.6000.16386 32bit Unicode

--------------------------------

Which must be referring to what's shown above as swap space

I go to the virtual memory setting and it shows

------------------------------------
Total paging files for all drives
Min 16 MB
Recommended 6139 MB
Currently allocated 4393 MB
------------------------------------

So I have 4GB RAM, 8GB of swap making 12GB Virtual, yet I only have around
a 4GB pagefile.

I'm totally confused as to what is using this other 4GB swap space.
