Page file fragmented

This looks like a serious hit on my system's performance. Is it? How do I
consolidate the page file. Defrag doesn't seem to touch it, and I assume
it's one of those chartreuse un-moveable files?

Pagefile fragmentation
Pagefile size = 766 MB
Total fragments = 27,866

If you have two partitions the easiest way is to delete it from whichever
one it is on and create a new one on the other partition.

In order to defragment system files, and other files that are normally in use,
the degragmentation must be done during the early stages of the system boot.
This will allow the defrag program to have full access to all files so that it can
place them together on the disk.

See:

Enable or disable Boot Defrag
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_defrag.htm

One of the third-party programs that allows this to be done easily
is called PerfectDisk:

hmm? 27 thousand
fragments...

if you relocate it in
its own partition and
put no other files in it,
then it will not become
fragmented.

there is also a utility
at microsoft.com
called pagedefrag
that can provide a
little help and give
you the stats on the
fragmentation.

Disable the pagefile in one windows session. Reboot, OR, shutdown.
Enable pagefile again upon next windows session. Reboot, OR, shutdown.
Sometimes XP figures out to put the pagefile well after any files on the
windows partition. Assuming that's where the pagefile is now.
If not, play your silly game some more.

Disable the pagefile in one windows session. Run Disk CleanUp including
the System Restore Option followed by Disk Defragmenter. Reboot, OR,
shutdown.
Enable pagefile again upon next windows session. Reboot, OR, shutdown.

You can do other things as well. A successful otcome using this approach
gets more difficult if you have less than 60% free disk space in the
partition.

Didn't see it on the weblink. Does that program assume the
pagefile is on the C: or perhaps the windows partition if a
different volume? Or, will it find the pagefile if elsewhere?

Bad link? Try going to the main site:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals
then click on the PageDefrag link on the right in the "Top 10
downloads" section. I think it will find it wherever it is but I've
never had it anywhere else but the C: drive.

The usual miguided replies to a page-file......To eliminate fragmentation,1st
run disk-clean-up,then defrag,once thru,open system properties,advanced,
performance,page-file,set C: to "no page file",click set 2X,restart pc.Once
in
xp,go to run,type:cmd In cmd type:Defrag C: Once thru,type:EXIT Reopen
system,page-file,set C: to "let system manage" click set 2X,close out,a
restart
of the pc should get messaged to you...Restart pc.This process may take a
time
or two,but will eventually get done,also,after the defrag,in system,resetting
page-file,you'll see "windows will over-right page file" you
agree.Also,purchase
another hd for storage but also, set it as another page file...

It knows where the pagefile is because it adds the information to the
BootExecute registry value.
