I am having a problem with using a browser to access the
internet. The computer was running Windows XP Home
Edition, I UPGRADED to Windows XP Professional SP1. I
also applied the Q831167 patch for IE. I have tried
installing other browsers MyIE2 and Netscape 7.1. Still
whenever I attempt to access the internet I get the "Page
cannot be displayed" screen or Netscape gives a blank
page. I know that I have internet access because I have
the option set to show in task bar when connected and I
can see where packets are being sent and received. I
have tried to connect at home using a dialup connection
and at work on the network with a T1 connection speed. I
have run a virus scan (defs dated 5/26/04) and none were
found.
Please help; is there anything I can do short of a clean
install.

I was able to solve my problem.
I happened to notice that while IE was trying to open a
DLL was starting shdoclc.dll
Apparently my nephew had loaded Kazaa onto the machine is
this is one of its parasites. I was able to go to
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/kazaabegone.zip
and download a removal tool.
Things are working fine.
Thanks anyway.
Alice
