Page cannot be displayed after upgrade to XP

This weekend I upgraded my desktop computer from Windows
98 to Windows XP Professional. Before making this
upgrade I was able to use both AOL 9.0 and Mailaka to
obtain dial-up access to the Internet through Internet
Explorer 6, and to access my Hotmail account through
Outlook Express. After the upgrade I can no longer
access the Internet through IE 6 (when I try to do so, I
get a "page cannot be displayed" message regardless of
which site I try to visit), nor can I access my Hotmail
account through Outlook Express. I can access the
Internet through AOL's internal browser, but I cannot use
AOL to access the Internet through my external browser or
to access my Hotmail account through Outlook Express,
both of which I was able to do prior to this upgrade.

I have tried to fix this problem by (1) following
instructions 1-3 in Method 1 of Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article 318378, and (2) using the New Connection Wizard
to establish a new connection to my Mailaka account.
Neither of these fixes solved my problem. I have checked
all of my dial-up connections to ensure that none use a
proxy server (none do). I have also used the Internet
Explorer Troubleshooter in XP, which tells me that I am
not connected to the Internet because I lose all four
packets in the ping test, even though I know I am logged
in through AOL because I am able to access the Internet
through its internal browser.

When I try to uninstall IE6 from the "Add/Remove
Programs" section of XP's control panel (so I can
reinstall it), I get the message "Invalid INF file."

I am totally stumped as to what to do next. Any
suggestions?

As a follow-up to my previous posting, I have run the LSPFix.exe program that has been mentioned on other postings as a fix for corrupt winsock files and it found nothing wrong with my files. I look forward to any other suggestions you may have. Otherwise, I'm going to have to uninstall XP....

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Thank you for responding to my request for help. I have done the following per the "Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites" web site: (1) followed the instructions in the section called "Recommended Minimal Security Settings;" (2) ran Spybot (which I could not update due to my lack of an Internet connection) and Ad-Aware (the most recent version), each of which identified some things on my computer which I removed [except for Sidestep, which I wanted to keep on my computer, and several "DSO exploits" related to a security hole in IE that I could not fix because doing so prevented me from reading the messages in this forum]; (3) ran HijackThis and submitted the log to the Spywareinfo forum [a response has not yet been posted]; and (4) ran LSPFix, which did not identify any problems. I did not implement the preventative measures outlined in the sections titled "How To: Prevent this from happening again?" and "Additional Prevention." None of these fixes resolved my original problem. Do you have any further suggestions? Again, I greatly appreciate your willingness to help me resolve this problem

Ad-Aware and SpyBot S & D are virtually useless without a very recent
update. You connected to the Internet to post your message.

I was able to solve my problem after looking more closely at the log file created by Ad-aware this afternoon. That file indicated that there was a process running for vsmon.exe, which the log file indicated is a Zone Labs application. Prior to upgrading to XP Pro, I was running Zone Labs' ZoneAlarm firewall on my computer, and this was not mentioned as a potential problem in the upgrade report prepared by the XP installation procedure prior to my upgrade. In any event, I was surprised to learn that there was a Zone Labs process running because there was no ZoneAlarm icon in my SysTray as there was under Windows 98, and the Windows Task Manager did not list ZoneAlarm as an open application. Nevertheless, I opened ZoneAlarm in XP and closed it right away, then tried to access the Internet through Internet Explorer 6 and to access my Hotmail account through Outlook Express--and they worked! Thanks for pointing me towards Ad-aware and the other related products listed on that web site. I'm going to continue using them and set my computer up with the preventitive measures mentioned

As long as we are on the subject of fixes for problems that arise with Internet Explorer and Outlook Express after upgrading to Win XP, let me share another one I experienced and the solution I found. After upgrading from Win 98 to XP Pro, I opened Outlook Express and discovered that my local folders had disappeared. The XP installation process had changed my Outlook Express store folder to "Outlook Expres" (it dropped the final "s") from "Outlook Express," where my missing local folders still resided. I changed my store folder back to “Outlook Express†and everything is working fine again

Thanks again for helping all of us (sometimes? often?) struggling computer users. Without people like you, we simply couldn't get by
