Packard Bell ..... NIS, no add/remove?

I've been asked to look at a Packard Bell laptop on which NIS2004 has
expired.

I've suggested the user replace with NOD32 plus a free firewall offering
such as Zone Alarm or the current Sygate.

I went to ADD/REMOVE, but in their infinite wisdom of bungled software,
PB seem to have not included any uninstall routine... *sigh*

I can't find an 'uninstall' in the programs' installation directory
either.

The laptop gets an expiry "warning" concerning NIS every few minutes
which is intensely irritating, and there is no apparent way to prevent
this.

How can I remove NIS with no ADD/REMOVE option whatsoever?

IIRC, there is a special program provided by *Packard Bell* themselves,
which is supposed to do the (un)installing for you. Look for something
like "smart restore" (it was named like this in old times).

Yes, I looked for something like that, but it wasn't obvious it was
there.

I'll have another more in depth look next time I have the laptop here.

Thanks.

I had the same problem very recently on my wife's new PC. I followed the
following instructions on the symantec site:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?
It worked but left another problem. It messes up Windows XP SP2's Windows
Security Center which still thinks NIS is installed, but out of date, and
is therefore unable to effectively monitor a replacement AV product! If you
have this problem *after* using the uninstall tool here is the solution:

Edit the Registry manually.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Security Center\Monitoring\SymantecAntivirus
Delete "DisableMonitoring"

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Security Center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall
Delete "DisableMonitoring"

Good luck!
