Pa Bear - help on OE

S

Silver

Hi Pa Bear, I tried running the telnet (I've never used
that before, will this work with a satellite server? As I
live where there is no phone service) thing using port
110, as I don't know where to find that particular info.
When I ran it it looked like a dos window zoomed up and
zoomed right out. I don't know if it connected or not. But
when I tried OE, it stayed at authorizing. If it helps,
Eudora gets mail... it connects to that same server. I
appreciate your help Pa Bear, and thank you. Silver

Telnet has nothing to do with 'telephone' <g>. Yes, telnet should work with
satellite connection.

Say your POP3 server is mail.myisp.net and you're told to use Port 25. To
telnet to the POP3 server:

Start>Run> [type] telnet mail.myisp.net 25 [exactly as you see it, with the
spaces]

Is there a router somewhere in the mix here? Have you checked MTU settings?

Did you by chance install any updates from Windows Update just prior to the
problem starting? ...was your anti-virus application running during the
install of the updates? ...was OE?

Sorry about the new post Pa Bear, I didn't know if you
would see a new post (if you had to look through every
page to find it, I had to go through 10 pages to find my
post).

I tried the telenet, and it worked.

I have no router, internal or external.

I don't know what MTU settings are, or where they would
be.

I know this is silly but yes, Norton anti virus is always
running... I don't know how to turn the thing off. I did
set the options not to check outgoing emails first time I
installed. With your suggestion, I turned off the incoming
as well. Windows was set-up to "update automatically," but
I don't know if it was doing so whilst I was using OE?
There have been a few times I had OE up and running while
cruising the net. I have now turned off "automatic windows
update." If memory serves, I think the update happened
before the problem by a couple days, but with any human
endeavor, memory can be faulty. Any other suggestions.

The original thread is http://snipurl.com/6mfa.

Can you send from the account? Are you having any problems at all in IE?

Try uninstalling the anti-virus application completely, then try polling for
mail in your current Identity. If no joy, create a new Named Identity,
configure the account in it and try to poll.

With the AV uninstalled, you should not be connected to the 'net other than
when you try polling! Remember to reinstall the AV afterwards.

If still no joy, it's time to...

Repair or Reinstall IE and OE
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

If the Repair doesn't help, a Reinstall is in order. Follow the
instructions carefully. You should have no other applications open
(includes your anti-virus) throughout either procedure!

As some MS techs were helping you originally (and may have caused the
problem), I see no reason why they shouldn't also assist you in performing
the Repair or Reinstall for no additional charges.
