Networking b/t XP Home and Win98

Andrew

Hi all,

I'll try to keep this brief. I've just gotten a new Dell
Dimension 2400 with XP Home pre-installed, and I'm trying
to get it networked with the two other computers on the
LAN that are running Win98 SE. Thus far, I've been able
to get the new computer to connect to the network, and the
Win98 computers can access the new computer's shared files
(i.e., browse through the network). However, this does
not work vice versa. When I try to browse either of the
Win98 computers through the network, I get a password
prompt which responds to nothing.

Also of note, the new computer with XP Home is not using
NetBIOS, but NetBEUI for its protocol. I'm also having
problems installing a network print port; when I get to
the final screen of the installation, the NetBEUI tab is
crossed off with a red X (disabled).

Might anyone have had similar problems, or some insight?

Do you install your network from the XP PC or from the
others computers?? If you did it from the XP PC then
should run again the network wizard and change your
network type because the one you'd chosen isnt' working
properly. Referring to your protocols problem you should
delete them and reintall them.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP Home to fully enable file sharing:

If the existing network already uses NetBEUI, you need to install
NetBEUI on XP:

No, the XP PC is being networked into a preexisting LAN
setup. I tried to delete and reinstall the NetBEUI
protocol, but it results in the same problem...

Hi Steve,
Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP Home to fully enable file sharing:

XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/network
setupwiz.htm

I did this when I initially connected the XP PC to the
preexisting network. I didn't, however, run the same
networking software on the 98 SE systems that are also
connected to the LAN; could that be the problem?
If the existing network already uses NetBEUI, you need to install
NetBEUI on XP:

This I definitely already did. When I look at the
Properties of my LAN, it shows NetBEUI as an enabled
protocol that is uses (the others are Client for Microsoft
Newtorks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks,
QoS Packet Scheduler, and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)).
However, when I try to install the Remote Print Port, the
NetBEUI tab is marked off with a red X.

No, it's not necessary to run XP's Network Setup Wizard on the 98 SE
systems. When you run the Wizard for the first time on an XP system,
it removes some file sharing restrictions. That doesn't apply to 98
SE.

I'm sorry, but I don't know what remote printing software you're
using, so I don't know why the NetBEUI tab has a red X. Make sure
that you follow the NetBEUI installation instructions to the letter,
copying both files to the proper folders. One of those folders is
hidden.
