Overwrite a symbol so as to double them up-how?

I am trying to get two symbols to go into the same space and double up, so as
to put a checkmark in the box, or create a square root sign with a checkmark
and a high upper lines, but the Help Index 'Overwrite' info only tells how to
delete the stuff I am going over(vs insert), and searches only brought up
100's of things that have nothing to do with it! Isn't there a non-deleting
backspace option available?

You need to look for a slightly different term, "overstrike" instead
of "overwrite". Word does this with the \o variant of the EQ field.
See section C of http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/Banner_Text.htm for an
explanation.

Although you can do what you want with an overstrike field (see
http://home.earthlink.net/~wordfaqs/Overbar.htm), this is quite unnecessary.
The Wingdings font contains a checked box at character 0254. There is also a
proper check character (a square root symbol is not the right thing to use).
The Wingdings 2 font contains other checked and x'd boxes and circles. For
more, see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/InsertSpecChars.htm
