Outlook won't remember my password

Everytime I open up outlook the username and password pops up with my login
and the password blank and the remember password box grey'd out. I've
opened up the accounts entered the password under the server tab and checked
the remember password box and next time I go in there it's blank again. The
same thing happens with my microsoft outlook except that the remember
password box is not grey'd out but the password is never there although I
have entered the password in the appropriate box.

Anyone know what's going on here?

I have tried all the fixes out on the Microsoft knowledge base, and none of
them work. It must be a bug. they did not work for me.

i can confirm that for Outlook 2000 in Windows 2000
even if I have done all fixes of MSKB it doesn't work for me too
even though it's only the same hint: delete subkeys of
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider

even though send/receive works
from time to time the POP3 password dialog pops up

annoying bug, isn't it
any ideas?
