Outlook won't open word attachments

Use windows xp and outlook 2003 and have all updates.. Not sure if this
started happening since a security update or when but if someone sends me a
word attachment (office 2003), I 2 click it to open it as I always use to do
but now all it does is come up a blank gray page. No error message, nothing.
Any help in this matter as I've tried everything under the settings etc,
except to uninstall and reinstall office 2003.

Can you double click on the file if you save it to the desktop?
