Have you tried defragging your hard drive? If you're hearing grinding
sounds, it doesn't sound like it's an Outlook problem per se. I'd back up
all data first (including your PST file) and try a defrag.

I have done the defrag, it is unique to outlook and not other programs.
Here is a question, I did load up a .pst and it seems to have occurred
around the same time. does using psts screw up outlook, does it have to
search the whole drive fro the file>???

How big is your PST file?
Have you run scanpst.exe against it? (make a backup copy first).

Also - when you post in here, please always include your version/mode/SP
level of Outlook (help | about)

outlook 2K, pst is about 600MB and I did run scanpst

hope you can offer some suggestions

I can't think of anything else. It's odd that Outlook alone causes your hard
drive to make grinding sounds.
