Why is Outlook 2007 so slow? Has it bloated so much?

I have an AMD Athlon 64 3500 processor and 1GB ram with SATA hard drives yet
Outlook 2007 seems to take minutes to grind into action and is really slow at
doing anything eg sending a message leaves it not responding for ages. Anyone
else experienced this? Is there a solution - apart from returning to Office
2000?

as to what you can do.
If none of that helps, please post a reply in that thread telling us
what kind of accounts and how many you have, and describing the slowness
in detail.

I have a similar problem. Thank you for the info on this, I have read it
and performed the suggestions given. I have seen Outlook.exe use up to
104,000K memory (it averages about 70,000k)! And this is with RSS turned
off, unneeded COM add-ins turned off, .pst files (outlook and archive)
defragged using the contig tool. Clear type is disabled. Ran Office
Diagnostic tool and no problems were found.

When I minimize Outlook 2007, the memory usage goes way down, averaging
about 4,000 - 8,000K memory.

Then when I maximize Outlook, the memory usage is about 16,000 - 20,000K.

If I run Outlook 2007 in safe mode the memory usage is about 16,000 -
20,000K.

I noticed the Outlook program shortcut has a /recycle option. What is this
and should I remove that option?

I need to find out what is causing the huge memory bloat when the program
starts and why all that bloat goes away after a minimize and maximize
operation. The add-ins are present whether the program is minimized or
maximized so that cannot be the reason for the huge memory uasge, right?

Update: I removed every add-in and the memory usage is about 36,000K when
opened.

I'd guess Outlook does some creative memory swapping to use a minimal
amount of memory at all times?

That's actually pretty typical - the amount of memory it uses is based on
your machine's memory and the usage should go back up as outlook runs. It
grabs what's available and releases it as other programs need it. Minimizing
or minimizing to tray releases all of the extra memory.

I believe outlook 2003 was the first that did this, at least in a really
noticeable manner.
