Outlook will not send messages in "outbox"

G

Guest

This has been a recurring problem for me. Usually, I can fix it, but not
this time. I can compose a message, or reply to a message, it doesn't
matter. When I click the send/receive button, the messages in the outbox
will not send, even though I know the information in the servers "incoming
mail" and "outgoing server" are correct. It just doesn't send the damn
messages. When the dialog box pops up, telling me the progress, I can tell
if it is going to work. If it is going to work, the little icon by the
"sending" message will be the little down arrow, and when it is not going to
work, it will be a check mark. What can I do?

What version of Outlook do you have? Do you get any error messages when
messages aren't sent?

Jeff,

About the error messages. I have received messages saying that the outgoing
SMTP server required verification, which I never changed from default. I
went into "more settings" and the "Outgoing Server" tab. I changed that back
to what it I thought it should have been (My outgoing server (SMTP) requires
verification.) Then it worked fine...for two days. Then I received the same
message. I went back in, and all the settings were exactly the same as they
were before (the two days that is worked.) So i clikcked around a little to
see what else I could mess up...viola! It worked! I was so happy, I didn't
even pay attention to what I had clicked, so the next time I got the error, I
didn't know what to change. Currently, I have the verification box checked,
and the "log on using" radio button selected. I have a username types in
there, but I like to type my password in. Also, I found that if I have the
"send immideately when connected" box checked under "sending/receiving" and
so far, this has worked. This isn't a fix, however, and I would like some
info on how to fix this bug. I am strictly not "up to" SP2. I will not
install it on my system, I have already crahed once b/c of SP2. I don't
think this would be in any advice you had to give, but just for a "heads-up."

Thank you for your time, Jeff.

You might try checking the "login to incoming server before sending" box on
your "Outgoing server" tab. Intermittent login failures like those you're
describing can happen if you're supposed to use that setting but aren't -
sometimes you'll be trying to send mail right after you've downloaded mail
and it will work, other times you haven't downloaded recently so it doesn't
work.

That makes sense.

Just joining this discussion. My Outlook started becoming unstable after
download fixes about a month ago. Am running Win/2000 with Office XP
Standard. If I don't start Outlook first after a reboot, it won't start at
all. Now, it won't send messages sitting in the out box - Response to
clicking Send/Receive button is, "Operation Failed". No settings have been
changed

You're joining the wrong discussion - your symptoms are entirely different.

helps.

I am in the same boat. My outlook 2002 does not send any e-mails except the
"test" e-mails that it generates under the test settings tab. I have 2
e-mail accounts with Roadrunner, differerent passwords, same POP/SMTP
settings and until the other day everything worked. Here's the wild part, I
have outlook express for newsgroups at Univ. of Phoenix...I set up a RR
account in it this am because I was desperate to send an e-mail...that
worked, but I want outlook back. I receive no error messages the
send/receive all progess does not detect the error. The only message about
it I get is if I try to close outlook with e-mails in outbox, but it still
does not send them.

Could you turn on diagnostic logging (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300479) and post
the OPMLog.log file after you try to send?

The logs indicate that Outlook thinks that there are no messages to send.
When this happens, are the messages in the outbox italicized or not?

My messages are missing the "send" button which would put them in the outbox
to send...I have dragged them in and they are still not italicized when I
drag them in.

Dragging a message into the outbox will not send it - only clicking on the
"Send" button will do that. Did you create these messages, or are you just
trying to resend messages that you received?

Gentlemen,

I too have a similar problem after installing the critical Office update
from mid-December. In my case clicking "Send" on a message will move it to
the "Outbox" but not italicize the message header as happens whenever a
message is truly ready to send. Thus the "send engine" doesn't think there
is anything to send. Reopening the message in the "Outbox" folder gives the
status, "This message has not been sent." Reclicking "Send" just returns it
to the folder, again unitalicized.

The work-aound is to click on the "Send immediately when connected" option,
whereupon the message goes to the "Outbox" italicized after clicking "Send"
in the message. The message is then sent immediately. But with the default
delayed send (not until "Send and Receive" is clicked) option, nothing is
ever italicized or sent from the "outbox".

Do you have any Outlook add-ins (see Tools -> Options -> Other -> Advanced
Options... -> Add-In Manager...)? Apparently some add-ins interfere with
the marking of a message as submitted for sending by opening it after it is
submitted.
