Outlook sync to iPhone

I've tried sincing my microsoft outlook calender and contacts to my iPhone
using iTunes but it doesn't work. A microsoft error message comes up saying
that I should log onto Outlook and make Outlook my default mail client,
which
I have done. Apple is no help. They say to contact Microsoft.
