Outlook spontaneously deletes first message in INBOX?

I have received a report from a user that when they first open Outlook 2002,
the very first message gets moved spontaneouslyfrom the INBOX to the DELETED
ITEMS folder. Had I not witnessed it myself, I would have never beleived
them. Has anyone seen this before?

it's really deleted, not marked as read and hidden by a view that hides read
items?

Are there any rules configured?

The item is moved into the DELETED ITEMS folder and is still marked as
unread. There are no rules configured on this machine. It is running Outlook
2002 SP2. This just started happening within the last couple of days. The
last updates that have been applied to Office on this machine was at least a
month ago.

Is there any anti-virus or anti-spam software on the machine? If so, try
turning off any mail-related features and see if that's the problem.

There is AdAware installed, but that is not an active sacanning program.
Symantec corporate version 8.1 installed, but I don't believe that is causing
this. The biggest "weird" factor I am running into is that this only happens
to the very top unread message in the INBOX. All the other unread messgaes
from that point forward remain. As you open and close Outlook, it only moves
the first one to DELETED ITEMS and leaves it marked as unread.
