So, what DOES happen? What type of account?
 
Thank you, Brian. The messages are deleted entirely without going to the
Deleted Items Folder. My understanding is that when deleting a message in
the INBOX, it transfers to the DELETED ITEMS folder to afford a "second
chance."

You still haven't stated your account type. State as well what views you're
using, in both the Inbox and Deleted Items folders.
