Messages deleted from Inbox are not in "Deleted Items" folder

I'm using Outlook 2003.

If I delete a message that's in the Inbox (using the 'X' icon), that
message is gone completely; it's not in the Deleted Items folder as I
expect.

I have a rule that filters emails from some senders into a personal
folder. Messages in that personal folder that are deleted are
transferred to the Deleted Items folder. So, at least in this case
Outlook is doing as I expect.

(I do _not_ have Outlook configured to permanently delete messages in
Deleted Items on exit.)

How do I prevent messages deleted from my Inbox from disappearing
completely? I want them in Deleted Items after deletion. I've had no
luck finding an option in Outlook to do this.

Thanks.

Sorry, please ignore my question.

I discovered the deleted messages in the Deleted Items under Mailbox.
The other Deleted Items folder where I couldn't find the delete
messagtes was under Personal Folders.
