Outlook running good, then stopped working

I am running Vista and using Outlook 2003. It was running great on both my
laptop, and our desktop (running XP) until 1 wk ago. Now whenever you open
it, you get the message: the program has stopped working....checking for a
solution....
No changes have been made to either computer that I am aware of. I've tried
starting in safe mode with the same message and shutting down. I even
disabled the firewall with no positive results as well.

I actually signed up for this list because I was having the same problem. Only difference is it was Outlook 2007. I tried everything I could find on the internet including:

Changing a registry entry;
Use Scan PST;
Remove then add user; and
Uninstall and reinstall Outlook.

In the end what ended up working was using a restore point before the last windows update (around Jan. 16th). Now Outlook works just fine. Have no idea why this worked, but needless to say I set auto update to off.
