when i set up an email account in outlook express, i am having a problem in
that i am getting a tcp/ip error message, no socket.

this is a new machine. emachine t2385. 2.3 gig, 500 meg ram. xp home.

this problem seems to be xp related, as i have checked my router, and 3
other computers connected to it and its just this one computer with pop3
email account (s) that will not send or receive.

it has a bujilt in lan, and i can surf web pages, no problem. only email
seems to be effected, and only pop3 as i have msn/hotmail configured in
outlook express, they work just fine. go figure?

i further eliminated and hardware issues by booting linux i have installed
and sent myself a test message, and sure enough, it went and came back to
me.

so the hardware is working fine, it really seems to be xp thats the problem.

i've removed all protocalls BUT tcp/ip on the local area connectio and for
one brief time it did work, then stopped.

i'm baffled and i don't know where to look in xp to resolve this problem.
i'd appreciate any inpput so i can know where to start looking for my
problem.

thank you!

harold

What are the names of the POP3 (or IMAP) and SMTP servers you are trying
to connect to?

Can you ping to these server names? If no, then the servers may be down,
or your DNS not working. If yes, then are you sure you are putting them
into the right spaces in the email config (not reversing them?)

i have 3 pop 3 accounts. none of them work. i have 2 imap, they do work.

the server names are correct, i triple checked that.

dns? i haved dsl, and 4 computers connected to a broadband router. only
this computer has the problem. other 3 are ok.

Ping to the three POP3 servers. Do you get reply?
