outlook not responding

I have a new machine and new XP. There is often a 2-3
MINUTE lag waiting for outlook to respond to anything.
During this time ctrl+alt+delete displays 'not
responding'. Anyone know how to fix this?

Check under "Tools->Options", the "Other" tab - make sure
Instant Messaging is not checked. If that's not it,
you'll need to give more information about your connection
(Exchange server, POP3, IMAP, etc.), any Event log
entries, versions and service packs - I'll stop there for
now.
