Hi,
I am use Outlook 2000 (Office 2000 Suite) on
a Windows XP Home version pc.

When I open Outlook,
1) the outlook screen begins,
2) the outlook task bar opens,
3) but the entire program freezes - not responds.

I have ran the 'repair' option with the Installation CD - no change.
I have reinstalled Office 2000 - no change.
I have updated Windows XP - no change.
I have installed Office SP 3 - no change.

All of the other function of Office 2000 operate with no problems.
Luckily, I have backed up my .pst files and have 100% of my files.
My PDA has all contacts and appointments. And my "outlook" pst
file is 'modified' every time try to open Outlook.

I am finding that this 'no responding' is out of my league. Does anyone
have any suggestions? Before this meltdown, I was thinking of upgrading to
Office 2007 in the fall,
but now I have misgivings.

thx
Darrel.

Close Outlook. Find and rename outcmd.dat to .old. (If using Windows 2000 or XP, you will need to enable searching hidden and system folders.)

Once you have done so, reopen Outlook and it should open fine. You will need to rebuild any custom toolbars or customizations as the file outcmd.dat controls how the toolbars display. When it becomes corrupted, it will cause Outlook to hang because it cannot create the toolbars that you expect.

Hi.
I renamed the file.
Restarted the computer.
Click on Outlook.
Outlook rebuilt my toolbars, then hangs.

As an experiment, I created a second profile on my computer.
Clicked on Outlook,
Outlook works fine.

So the corruption must be on my profile somewhere.
Any clues?

thx
Darrel...

If a new mail profile cleared up the problem, then you have found the culprit. Profiles become corrupt for any number of reasons. Be sure to configure your new mail profile to re-use your current .pst.
