outlook is very slow to respond

I just transferred my outlook file to a new (and faster) laptop but I'm
finding that it is now extremely slow to respond. If I use the mouse to
select a new message or task, it takes literally 6 seconds for the selection
to activate. The .pst file is quite large ~2GB but I didn't have the same
problem with the old machine. I've disabled spam killer but it hasn't made
any difference.
