I used outlook, by default, to send an email. Right afterwards when i checked
my earthlink email the inbox had been emptied. Yet all those emails were
sitting in theoutlook inbox. What is happening?

If you are downloading from this account using the POP3 protocol, this is
normal behaviour. There might be a way to change this in the options for
your email account, on its website settings page, if there is one.

If the email account can be accessed through the IMAP protocol instead, you
may want to use that instead, as it offers more advanced features, at the
sacrifice of speed.

Just to clarify, what you need to change, if possible, to your POP3 settings
is to make emails stay on the server after download. This can be done
through the web interface of your email service, or sometimes in the Outlook
properties for that account.

Lee, you need to change a setting in Outlook. You didn't state which
version of Outlook you have, the steps I'm providing are for my version,
Outlook 2003, you can adjust as necessary for your version. On the toolbar,
go to Tools, select E-Mail Accounts, select View or change existing e-mail
accounts, click next, select your EarthLink account, click change, click
more settings, go to the Advanced tab, place a check next to Leave a copy of
messages on the server, adjust the options below that as desired, click
apply and ok.

That should resolve the issue for you.
