Outlook inbox folders not showing new mail unless clicked on

Outlook 2000, Exchange 5.5, OS = Windows XP Pro latest SP...

While Outlook is running... if I am viewing the contents of one of my
folders within outlook... any new mail that arrives does not appear in my
folder list. In other words, if new mail comes in, the expected behavior is
that I would see (in a folder that has currently no 'UNREAD' messages) is
that any new mail would appear in that folder by displaying the (1) next to
the folder in the folder list.

My issue is that if I am viewing contents in any other folder I will not
know there was any new mail until I click on another folder, any folder... it
does not have to be the inbox necessarily.. but magically when you click on
another folder.. any new mail suddenly appears. The same actually occurs
when I send email. The email will appear in my Outbox... the folder list
will show (1) and until I go to another folder... it shows that I still have
the message in my Outbox.... this is not the case however as I tested with a
colleague and they got the email as soon as I sent it...

Is this something that can be addressed? It is frustrating to not know when
I have new mail without having to make sure I am constantly changing
folders...

HELP!

Thanks,
Matthew Jones

Thanks for the quick reply... but I am not 100% sure what setting you are
referring too. Could you be more specific? I have the current view set to
Messages, I think this is what you mean. However I am not sure how that
would address the issue of the folders updating themselves vs. only updating
when clicking on a folder... Any other thoughts?
Thanks,
Matt

I am having the same issue here. We have Exchange 2003 and Outlook 2002.

Person A, within our network, sends an email to Person B, also within our
network, The email does not appear in Person B's inbox for up to 15 minutes.

Sometimes a user will open an email and suddenly a bunch more emails will
appear that are dated for many minutes before.

Thanks Ben... I think that solved my problem! Although some what different
than Brock's issue... it had not occurred to me that the RPC could be hung up
because of that... Anyway, I manually added Outlook.exe to the exception list
in the Firewall and at least on my first test.. I sent an email and it
immediately disappeared from my Outbox... Now I just need to test an inbound
email to see if the folders update without me having to click on the folders!

Thanks!

Matt

Thank you, Ben. I have added Outlook to the exceptions and will test.

Matt- sorry to piggy back on your issue. I thought they were close enough
that they could be related. Thanks.

Hey no problem! Looks like we both got our issues fixed via the same means!
