Outlook hanging on show

I'm using Outlook (from Office XP, Standard). When I open the app, the main
window displays, then just hangs with the cursor stuck in hourglass. If I
kill the process and restart, it prompts to open in Safe Mode but this
doesn't help - the same thing happens.

I've reinstalled twice (without uninstalling).

Any ideas???

I deleted the archive file (1.5GB!) and this seemed to fix things.
