I am trying to figure out a way to save my mail and address book prior to formatting and reloading my hard drive. Is there a way to back up mail to a file that I can place on a CD? or is there a file that I can just copy off of my computer that will accomplish the same thing?

Export your .pst file, which contains all of your mail
folders, including contacts, inbox, deleted items, etc. Go
to File|Import/Export and there is a wizard that should
help out.

1. Search your drive(s) for: *.dbx. They can usually be found in a
folder similar to this:

C:\Documents and Settings\<USERID>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{LONG ID#}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

2. Run WinZip (or whatever zip utility you use) and zip up all files
in this folder.

3. Save this compressed file to CD (or, if you're lucky, it might even
fit on a floppy disk -- these dbx files compress down to almost nothing).

As for the address book, search your drive(s) for: *.wab. You
might find more than one, simply copy or zip the latest one to your
CD or a floppy disk.

4. Reformat and reload Windows, WinZip, IE/OE and whichever
Service Pack and other updates you had before.

5. Create a folder named "Mail" directly off the root directory of
your drive. Uncompress the archive from the CD or floppy into
this "Mail" folder, and copy your .WAB file there too.

6. In OE, go to File/Import/Messages, select MS OE6, select
"Import mail from an OE6 store directory", then Browse to the
"Mail" folder, etc.

7. To import your Address Book go to File/Import/Address Book.
