Outlook Express will not start

Pete England

I can no longer use Outlook Express. When I try to open
the program I get two error messages:
1st, "Outlook Express could not be started. The
application was unable to open the Outlook Express message
store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is
full. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance.
(0x8007000E),"

then, "Outlook Express could not be started because
MSOE.DLL could not be initialized. Outlook Express may not
be installed correctly."

I an not out of memory (512MB installed) or disk space. I
know the message store is OK because I copied it to my
laptop and have been getting my mail from there.

I searched the Knowledge Base and found reference to
#318378 on Reinstalling or Repairing IE and OE in XP. I
tried both methods. First I edited the Registry to
indicate OE was not installed and then I installed IE6. It
seemed to run the installation OK and the updates but it
did not fix the problem. I tried twice more.
Then yesterday I reinstalled XP and the all the updates -
no luck.

I am out of ideas, any suggestions?

Try compacting your files manually while working *offline*.

File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar).
File>Folder>Compact all folders.

In Tools>Options>Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background.

If still no joy:

Bruce, thanks for the tip. Since I could not start OE at
all I could not try the compacting idea. But I did look at
the tips on InsideOE and found the solution. I have all
the message files on my laptop so I just deleted them on
the Desktop machine and OE started right up. Creating new
folder of course. Then I copied my folders back from the
laptop and I am in business.

Why is this so hard? You might think MS would have this
tip in their database.

Thenks again.
