Outlook Express Vs. Outlook

Scott

I have a question as follows, I'm using Windows XP Pro, Norton Internet
Security 2004, having more than 13,000 messages in a lot of folders but none
of them in the system folders like Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, to
prevent corruption and the problem I have with OE is that it opens very
slow, and when I change between folders it may take 3 seconds or so to
change, or if I want to move a message to a different folder it also takes
time, Now I have once imported the massages into Outlook, and every thing
went fine, I was able to change between folders in less than a second, so my
question is are there any problems with Outlook that OE doesn't have, so
that I should remain with OE despite the problem I have. ?

Thanks,

Scott

When was the last time you compacted OE's messages? Do you have an AV doing
email scanning? If so, turn it off as it offers no added protection and can
cause the type of problem you are experiencing.

Dont know about OE, as this is an OL ng - different app, however might
suggest that you perhaps should have archived, or whatever OE calls it, as
it may be the files are simply to large to be dealt with efficiently.
You dont mention version of OL, but depending on version there is a size
limit to pst files, if exceeded can cause loss/total loss of pst.
I have to wonder what is the purpose of 13k msgs in a single file -
information overload?
Finally you should have exported from OE to OL to preserve modified dates of
msgs, import sets them all to import date - could be important.

I agree with the compacting. I also had a LOT of messages and OE6 did not
like it until I compacted. In fact, it was so bad that I had to move to 3
folders> delete the folder>move back to a new folder with the old name. I
WILL compact more often.

Do not archive mail on default OE folders. They will eventually
become corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing
mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder
regularly.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually
while working *offline* and do it often.

File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar).
File>Folder>Compact all folders.

In Tools>Options>Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background
and leave it unchecked.

The OP posted that he doesn't do that. Did you even read his post?

Do you make helpful & informative replies to numerous newsgroups, averaging
40+ posts per day, as does Bruce? We all use canned reponses for FAQ. I'd
have posted my own which you've undoubtedly seen scores of times here:

"Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

"Disable Background Compacting and frequently perform a manual compact of
all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

"Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection."

Somewhere there's a bridge missing someone.
