I had always used outlook express, but recently decided to take a look at
outlook.
It appears that outlook has less to offer me than outlook express ?

1/ How do i view image files attached to emails in outlook ?
in OE it was very simple and images were displayed in the message.
i dont see anything in any of the settings to enable this ?

Outlook isn't prone to getting hacked as much as outlook express because it
has better security features. You should never view an image in the preview
pane. Now-a-days code can be embedded into that picture and then when you
view it, it will run on your computer and could do serious damage. This is
why you don't view pics in the preview pane in outlook. Outlook express is
more for "fun" use and Outlook is taylored for the power user or a business
environment. How you can say Outlook has less than OE baffles me. Outlook
has all the features that oe has, plus a Personal Information Manager(pim),
with a calendar, contacts, journal, tasks, reminders, built in instant
messaging, web browser capability, conferencing, and alot more. Outlook is
oe on steriods, but in some cases it may just be too much for simple home
use.

Hi, Loctite.

I read the comments from purplehaz. May I offer a second opinion? ;^}

I've always used OE, too, since about OE4, when it left Netscape in the
dust. (I haven't tried recent versions of NS, so maybe it's catching up
now.) I've looked at Outlook a few times, including the new Outlook 2003.
It's easy to see how all those features could be useful in a large
organization. But I'm just one guy with one computer and one POTS phone
line - and no net but the Internet. I'm retired and use my computer in my
home office, which was built as a second bedroom. Rarely does anybody but
me touch my computer.

So I can't tell you much about Outlook, really. For me - and maybe for
you - OE is a perfect fit.

As to security, I DO practice safe computing and have so far never
contracted a virus. (OK. There was that one time when another professor
gave me a program on a floppy diskette he'd received from a student. There
was a virus on that, but I found and killed it quickly. I've still never
contracted a virus online.) I make sure my firewall and antivirus are
installed, currently updated, and running. I visit Windows Update (and
Office Update) often and install everything there. (Yep, I was protected
from the Blaster worm last Summer.) I rarely open any email attachments;
only from sources that I trust. And by trust, I mean both trust their
intentions and also trust that they practice safe computing, too, and won't
unintentionally send me something bad.

I almost always read email and news in OE's Preview Pane. As I said, I've
never contracted a virus this way. I've read about bad code that can
execute that way, but haven't actually run across any. And I read a LOT of
newsgroup posts - maybe a thousand on most days, plus a couple dozen emails
a day (not counting the hundreds of recent Sobig and Swen messages that went
into my Deleted Items folder; since I have OE set to empty this folder on
exit, I always scan the list before shutting down).

So, if you need the features in Outlook, use it. If your situation is like
mine, you may want to stick with OE. Either way, there's no need to feel
guilty or deprived. Use what fits YOU.
