outlook express shutdown

outlook express 6 on my windows xp today began closing
involuntarily after message stating in part "Outlook
Express has encountered a problem and needs to close."
I sent error report to Microsoft and was advised through
various alerts that I needed to install a "critical"
express update. Done but problem has persisted. Would
welcome any suggestions. thank you

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
earlier than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show?

Possible causes

1. Viral infectio
1. Application (OE) problem
2. Mail file corruptio

Possible solutions

1. Update antivirus, and scan your bo
2. Run Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.as
3. Rename files containing your mail:

C:\Documents and Settings\"user name here"\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{"some numbers and letters here"}\Microsoft\Outlook Expres

and OE will recreate fresh files
