Outlook Express not responding at all

Outlook Express starts up, then freezes completely when you click on
anything. It is not working behind the scenes either because it is not
picking up any new emails (the last activity is on 10/04) I end up closing it
down, going through the error reporting process, follow all the steps that
microsoft advise (downloading and installing updates, downloading and running
anti spyware and 2006 anti-virus software). That found a few nasties, which
I have removed. I've also followed the steps in the Help and Support Center
troubleshooter. However, all to no avail I still can't get the program to
open. Any suggestions?
