Outlook Express file location

I am trying to import my old Outlook Express e-mails from
my old hard drive, can anyone tell me where the mail file
is stored and what it's called?

Hi, David.

You'll have better luck if you ask this question in one of the several
Outlook Express newsgroups, rather than this generic WinXP group. When you
post there, be sure to mention WHICH version of OE your email files were
stored in. As you probably know, OE5 and OE6 use files with the .dbx
extension; OE4 used .idx and .mdx, as I recall, and I don't remember about
versions before that.

It depends on which version of Outlook Express the old version was. If it
was Outlook Express 4.*, then search the old drive for *.mbx files (which
were the mailbox folders for that version e.g. Inbox.mbx). If the version
was 5.* or later search for *.dbx files. (which are the mailbox folders for
those versions e.g. Inbox.dbx). Once found, look at the properties for
those files (by date and size you should be able to know if they're the
correct files for mail for the identity that you want to import. Take note
of the path of the files.

Then open Outlook Express, click the File menu/Import/Messages, select the
version of Outlook Express you want to Import from (version 5 can be
Imported by selecting version 6 because they both use *.dbx files for their
folders), click the Next button, click to select the option to: Import from
OE 6 Store directory, click the Next button, click the Browse button to give
the path where you found the folders mentioned in the first paragraph. The
rest is self-explanatory.

Try posting in one of these newsgroups:
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x
microsoft.public.internet.outlookexpress.mac for OE for Macintosh

If those groups aren't carried on the news server that's carrying this group
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups).

On your old computer, fire up Outlook Express and click on File...
Export.... Messages. Export them to whatever media both your computers can
handle. Now plug in the media to your new computer, open Outlook Express
there and click on File...Import... Messages.
Browse to your copied messages and import them. You can do the same with
your address book.
