When opening outlook, I recieve my e-mail as usual, but
when I get to 'message 39 of 225' the e-mails stop coming
(I get loads of spam). I've tried changing my port number
to 110, but that doesn't work. I've made my timeout to
the max (5 mins), but no joy. This is the message;

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection.
Possible causes for this include server problems, network
problems, or a long period of inactivity.
Account: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Server: 'pop.ntlworld.com',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 119, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number:
0x800CCC0F

Probably a corrupted or mal-formed message. I've seen this
several times on Bellsouth.net mail user accounts. Quickest
fix is use the Web mail of your ISP, read/save what is really
important and globally delete all other content.

While logged in, most ISP's offer a type of Spam filtering
(Brightmail, etc). Instead of letting it accumulate on the server
setup the filtering to block it. 225 messages is a lot of Spam
to have to weed through.

Outlook Express needs Port 110 to receive mail. Port 119 is for
newsgroups.

For the error message:

Error 0x800ccc0d or 0x800ccc0f when Receiving and Sending E-Mail

Turn off the e-mail scanning in your anti-virus.

You are still protected:

If you have Norton Anti-Spam, that can also be the cause of the
error.

OE specific newsgroup:

Or:

I've blocked all the e-mail that have accumulated (the
same e-mails reappear over and over i.e. it's the same 39
e-mails over and over again), but this has not worked.
Instead of the same 39 e-mails re-appearing again,
instead no e-mails appear and the error message appears
straight away.

1. Go to the account's online page and delete message 39 or use telnet to do
so: http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/pop3telnet.htm

2. Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<paste>
Disabling email protection does not leave you vulnerable to viruses and
malicious software in email. It is a separate layer of protection in
addition to Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect scans any incoming files, including
email, as they are saved to your hard drive. As long as you keep your virus
definitions up to date with LiveUpdate, and keep Auto-Protect enabled and
set to scan files as they are created or downloaded, your system is fully
protected.
