Outlook Express error code

On an emachine with Windows XP Home version:
When I try to download newsgroups to Outlook Express the
following appear: 480 "Authentication required for
command" and 800ccca4 "Unable to open group." I contacted
the newsgroup provider but the steps they said to try had
only to do with account setup; they did nothing with the
error code, and the problem remains.
The newsgroup downloads worked fine until 3 days ago
then just "up and quit."
I'd greatly appreciate any ideas/help/fixes.
