installed an update and now IE7 and Outlook won't connect to the internet

When I shut down last night the computer said it was installing an update
and this morning I can not surf the net or download emails with IE7 or
Outlook 03. I know it's not my internet because Firefox works just fine (so
does Outlook Express with newsgroup access). Both apps open just fine, but
they will not connect to surf or download emails. I have disabled my
firewall but still no luck. I also went into add/remove programs and
selected show updates to try and remove what ever installed last night, but
according to the list the last update installed was about a week ago...

Any ideas?
