Outlook Express eMail disappearing

For about a week now, the contents of my Outlook Express email folders have
been disappearing. The folders remain, empty. The Recycle Bin contains
folders with the same name as my email folders, but with a dot-Bak extension.
I am running XP SP 3. Is this due to a known virus?

Try posting this in an Outlook Express news group - this is not one of them.
Outlook is a part of Microsoft Office and is what this group supports.
Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer and has its own news groups.
