Outlook Express Compacting prompt when using Outlook 2003

My spouse is using Outlook 2003 (service pack 3) on XP and has recently
started to get an Outlook Express prompt to compact messages.

I've read through the thread on Outlook Express compacting questions, and
nothing seems to apply--he's NOT using OE, he's not installed any new
software like desktop search. He doesn't use the email filter on the Mcafee
security center I have installed on his machine. He's very diligent about
discarding trash & junk mail and saves messages in his "my documents" folders
and not in Outlook.

What else can I check to correct this irritating problem?

Perhaps Windows Desktop Search was already installed? It takes a while
before Outlook Express starts prompting you. It can't hurt to check if
Outlook Express is indeed excluded from the indexing process.
