Outlook Express 6 - inbox reporting messages that are not there

I just came back off holiday to find several hundred e-mails to be read.
While downloading them, outlook siezed. I restarted outlook and eventually
cleared the backlog. Now I have a screen that tells me there are [129]
messages in the INBOX but I have deleted them all! As I recieve and delete
more mails, I expect this number to increase. Can someone please tell me what
is happening and how can I fix the problem. Many thanks.

I'm seeing this issue slowly on the rise and I'm beginning to wonder if an app
update is causing it.
If you have no messages in the inbox:
Make sure OE is closed.
Open either MyComputer or Explorer.
Expand c:\documents and settings\your user folder\local settings\application
settings\identities\ident#\microsoft.
Click on Outlook Express.
In the right pane Delete inbox.dbx.
Close out back to the desktop and reopen OE, the inbox folder will be rebuilt.

Thanks Brian. I have just done what you suggested and it did clear the INBOX.
However, I then recieved some mail, which I read and deleted, and then OE
indicated I had 1 mail left with the folder empty! My last OS update was
about a month ago (Security Update for Windows XP (KB925486)), and OE was ok
after that for a couple of weeks. I do run McAfee all the time and that is
the only other app that auto updates. The other software that I have recently
updated is MusicMatch Jukebox so that is another contender. In the meantime
I'll just keep deleting the dbx file. Thanks again for your help
