Wes has commented on what to do now. I would like you to consider what
might have caused your problem.
A recent change to Outlook Express introduced automatic compacting of
mail and news folders after Outlook Express is opened and closed 100
times. Compacting, once started, is an intensive process which absorbs
memory and processing power to the almost total exclusion of other
processes. This gives the impression that the machine has frozen.
Compacting can also take some time to complete with the result that
users frequently become frustrated at not being able to continue with
what they intended to do next.
The wrong thing to do is to stop the process in a brutal manner and
switching off the computer is just about the worst thing to do. You will
corrupt whatever folder is being compacted at the time. There is a
"Cancel" button which will stop compacting without the consequences of
folder corruption but it can take some time to take effect. You just
have to be patient and let the process complete.
The introduction of automatic compacting in the latest version of Out
look Express was intended to replace an unsatisfactory system of
"Compacting messages in background". The previous method also often
resulted in folder corruption when users did the wrong thing whilst it
was in progress. Whilst a user could opt out of using "Compacting
messages in background" there is no way of opting out of "automatic
compacting". I fear it will not be changed until the replacement for
Outlook Express comes with Windows Vista!

Hope this helps.
