Outlook errors with Desktop Search(?) after BCM install.

I just installed by retail box version of Office 2007 today, after having run
the trial for 6 weeks or so.

The initial install (which did not include BCM or Acctg 2007) went fine. I
used Outlook a couple of times.

Then, I installed Business Contact Manager.

I opened Outlook, and my machine re-booted.

Every time now that I open outlook, at least it's not rebooting my machine,
but I'm getting the pop-up error window that says:

MS Windows Search Protocol Host has encountered a problem and needs to close:

I send the error report, and in a few seconds it pops up again... It
happened 3 times this last time I opened Outlook.

It is interesting to note that I could see the Desktop Search icon in my
system tray flashing, which means it was indexing. Now that it has stopped
indexing, the error messages have seemed to stop. This may or may not mean
anything, I don't know... I am also running NET framework 3, which I
upgraded to AFTER I installed BCM. Once again, may or not mean anything.

The underlying error messages say this:

It's possible that BCM setup may have patched the .NET 2.0 CLR (I
remember a message to that effect), and installing 3.0 replaced the
patched CLR with an unpatched CLR.

I have the same problem & BCM is impossibly slow - unusable.

How do I 'repatch' CLR?
To what version?
Where do I get this version?
Will it make BCM run at a reasonable speed?

BCM v3 setup installs .NET 2.0 and two .NET patches.

If you look at the BCM setup folder on your media, you will see two
sub folders with six digit numbers. I believe they start with KB.
(Sorry I don't have the disk with me). They refer to Knowledge Base
articles on the Microsoft website. If you have those numbers (anyone?)
you can also go to microsoft.com and download them directly--that may
be easier than unpacking the BCM download, if you downloaded BCM from
the web instead of getting it on a disk. Those two folder/KBs contains
patches for the .NET CLR to fix bugs; probably as MSP files. Run them.
If the CLR on your machine doesn't already have them, they will get
installed. I believe I learned this from the readme file (perhaps in a
beta, but I don't any BCM on this machine either to check right now)
so you could look in the readme file me to learn more about the
patches.

The KB folders on the CD are 922981, & 923319.
Per your suggestion, I looked them up on the internet, as I didn't know how
to unpack those files from the installation CD...

and doesn't actually give you a link to the file, recommends you contact MS
for it.

923319 link is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923319/en-us
it doesn't give you an actual link to a file either.

They both recommend you wait for the next service pack...


SO -- anyway, I just loaded the 2nd Office 2007 CD (which has the hotfixes
that I saw on my initial install, and BCM & acctg 2007) and it came up to the
"Repair" or "Remove" installation screen. I chose repair, and it started
right into the Accounting 2007 re-installation, skipping the hotfixes part of
the install that happened before the initial install.

Of course, since this installation was already in progress, I just let it
continue. 1/2 way through the re-install, it got a stop error I guess, and
it rebooted.

Got scared after that, and chose to UNinstall CD2, which took off BCM, acctg
2007, and some SQL apps there for BCM I guess.

My computer is back to normal now, and I think I'm going to wait awhile
before I try reinstalling BCM... :) I'm relatively computer savvy, but BCM
is just a little too scary for me right now!

I have the same issue. I'm currently troubleshooting it with MS TS. I'll
report back any findings.

MS TS had me send them a copy of my application events log & they found I had
issues with Windows Desktop Search and .NET Framework. They had me remove WDS
to see if that resolved the issue. It did! Since I was dealing with an
Outlook-specific engineer I have to open a Windows case to troubleshoot the
WDS issue. I'll do so if I haven't used up my freebies yet!

Good Morning All,

I've experienced the same problems after installing BCM:

"search protocol error"
slower outlook performance
delay in seeing newly downloaded emails (change screens back and forth
to see)

I removed WSD and the annoying error message is gone.

Has anybody found anything new regarding this situation?

I just helped someone who was complaining of the same thing and they had
6000 messages in their Inbox. After showing them how to create folders to
store messages and create rules to automatically distribute incoming email
into those folders, their error messages went away. They also have 512MB of
RAM memory and I would recommend going to at least 1GB.

Could be the same problem and maybe not...

No, that is not my problem. I use folders extensively to organize my email.

I contacted Microsoft support and received these instructions:

[Beginning of instructions]

Step 1: Test the issue in Outlook Safe Mode
=============================
1. Click Start, Click Run;
2. Type “Outlook /safeâ€(without quotes, and there is a space between Outlook
and /Safe) into the input box and click OK.
3. 3. Outlook will start in safe mode (This will be indicated in Outlook
Window Title), do you see the error message this time?

If the error message disappear in safe mode, please go step 2. If not,
please try step 3.

Step 2: Disable Add-in
===============
1. Start Outlook 2007 normally, click Help menu, click on Privacy Options…;
2. In the opened window titled Trust Center, click Add-in in the left
column, click Go button at the bottom of the dialog box,
3. In the opened COM Add-ins dialog box, uncheck the Desktop Search add-in
box if you see, then click OK.
4. Click Help menu, click on Privacy Options… to start Trust Center again,
Click Add-in;
5. Drop down the Manage list at the bottom of the dialog box, select
Exchange Client Extensions, then click Go button, uncheck the Desktop Search
add-in box if you see, then click OK.
6. Restart Outlook again and check the issue.

Step 3: Repair Office
===============
1.Exit all 2007 Office programs.
2.Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
3.In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Microsoft Office Version
2007, and then click Change.
4.In the Microsoft Office Version 2007 dialog box, click Repair, and then
click Continue.

[End of instructions]

It said I should “uncheck the Desktop Search.†I couldn’t find such an
add-in, but I disabled the “Windows Search Email Indexer;†maybe it’s the
same thing. I did this and the error messages stopped appearing.

I don't know if this mean I’ll no longer have fast searching in Outlook or
