Outlook emails' disappear after being opened then closed

After I open an email in Outlook (via Hotmail) it disappears after I close
it. I believe that this is a set up problem but don't know details. Any
suggestions?

Are you filtering your view in Outlook to display only unread emails? View >
Current View. Make sure Messages is checked.
