outlook doesn't shut down all the way

When I close Outlook, it often doesn't close down all the
way, leaving multiple outlooks open in the task manager,
which have to all close before I can Shut Down/Restart
the system. Why??

Outlook 2002 under XP with SP2

Update your virusscanner/spamfilter/firewall or any other add-on for
Outlook. Some of them open an new instance of Outlook when they scan
received/send messages.
