Trouble shutting down Outlook 2003

I have been having a problem shutting down OL 2003 recently. When I shut
down my machine, I close all of the open windows individually, then select
from the start menu to shut down the computer. When I restart and open
Outlook, I invaribly receive the error message; The data file ‘Personal
Folders’ was not closed properly. This file is being checked for problems.

Then, agonizingly, it takes 6 or more minutes for OL to open. I am using
Word 2003 as my e-mail editor and running XP Pro as my operating system.
Please advise.

See if something here helps:

Scot,

I believe you have to go to File/Close All Items before you exit Outlook.
Try that.

so far, what it may be is the .pst file itself. It was suggested that I run
scanpst.exe, which I did and so far so good. The program did find
irregularities, so courts out right now - we shall see. Thanks for your
insights, though!
