Outlook deadly slow (mostly static!) when sending attachments

Outlook and XP.

Sending emails absolutely fine.

Sending emails with attachments (not very big, say 500k) used to be fine.
Now, sending emails with the same attachments the sending-message progress
bar leaps to half-way and stays there. Very occasionally, over several
minutes, it chunters on until it's finished sending but mostly it just stays
half-way. Like it's doing right now.

From the absence of flashing, no computer activity.

Receiving email with or without attachments absolutely fine.

Any ideas?

Do you have anything dealing with the attachments on the way out? Something
like auto-compressers, virus scanners, etc.
