can anyone tell me how to stop outlook from saving every contact that i reply
to or that I write to - in the contact list
its very annoying when you have a huge list of contacts in the TO: section
and you have to search for the one you really want

Outlook doesn't. Hasn't for some time. What version are you using?

If you actually mean that a new Contact Record is being created in your
Contacts Folder for everyone to whom you send a message, Outlook isn't doing
that. It can't. Only a third party add-in could do that.
If, instead, you actually mean your autocompletion cache, then just turn off
autocompletion.
