Outlook Address Book Will Not Open
After Format C and Reload As Shipped Software

Background:
I have 32 bit Microsoft Vista Ultimate. It is running on a Dell XPS420 with
Q6600, 2.4GHZ quad processor that I purchased in December 2007. I have 4 GB
@ 667 MHZ of memory (3.3 GB usable). I have a 256 MB ATI HD 2600 graphics
card. I have a Dell Ultrasharp 22 inch monitor (1680 x 1050 pixels). I use
McAfee VirusScan Plus. I have Office Professional 2003 and use Outlook for
e-mail. Microsoft Works 8.5 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 came with the
computer. I have 2 Optical drives E: & F: a 320 GB SATA hard drive C: & D:
and a 250 GB SATA hard drive G: for backup. Microsoft update is auto and all
Microsoft Windows software is current. Other programs such as McAfee
VirusScan, Windows Defender etc. are up to date.
Problem:

I had to format C and reload the Dell as shipped software because Vista was
damaged and could not be repaired. I saved the Outlook.pst file and loaded
it after I reloaded Microsoft Office. I have all my old e-mail. I can see
my Contacts in the Contacts Folder but when I select To: I get the following
error message: I get the same error message when I select Tool/Address Book:

The address list (book ?) could not be displayed. The contacts folder
associated with this address list (book ?) could not be opened. It may have
been moved or deleted or you do not have permissions. For information on how
to remove this folder from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Office

I formatted C:, loaded Microsoft Office Professional 2003, Loaded the
Outlook.pst file that I had saved before formatting C; & started Outlook.
Outlook came up with all my e-mail (inbox & sent items) as they were before I
formated C: Outlook Contacts Folder has all my contacts as they were before
I formated C: I am receiving and sending e-mail OK.

Of course there were many other programs and files to restore.

I was trying to answer your question. I guess I did not understand what you
wanted.

I have some additional information. I went to Tools/E-mail Accounts and
added a Personal Address Book. Now when I go to Tools/Address Book, I get &
acknowedge the error message and the Address Book Radio Box now has 4 entries
(Outlook Address Book, Contacts, Contacts & Personel Address Book). The new
Contacts has all my contacts in it. I need to eliminate the empty Contacts
and associate the good Contacts with the Outlook Address Book.

My notes indicate a simular problem when I transfered Outlook to my former
XP computer. I did fix the problem in a maner simular to the above
information. Except I do not remember all the details.

How you copied, transferred and connected to your Outlook data file are all
in play. You made one of those steps incorrectly. That's why I asked you
what you did. You haven't told us. Be clear. Be specific.

1. Final shutdown Outlook.
2. Saved Outlook.pst to G Drive.
3. Formated C: and restored the Dell as shipped software (Vista, Adobe
Elements, McAfee, etc). This restore is a built in Dell feature.
4. Installed Office Professional 2003 from my CD.
5. Copied Outlook.pst from Drive G: to C:\user\Bob in
PGI\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook. There was no Outlook.pst file present
when I copied to the folder.
6. Started Outlook. All my old e-mail & contacts came up OK except the
Outlook Address Book is empty and not accesible.

I am looking at Microsoft Help & Support Artical ID 287563 "Contact
Information does not appear in the address book in Outlook". I will try to
follow their instructions.

You never copy a file to Outlook's default location. That will not connect
it correctly to Outlook, but will corrupt your profile.
You copy it to any other location, then open it in Outlook: File > Open >
Outlook data file.

Copying direct worked for me. I used Microsoft Help & Support Artical ID
287563 to get my Contacts into my Outlook Address Book. I do not see any
corruption yet. Is there an Microsoft Help & Suport Article on your method?
I believe there is a need because Vista is easly damaged and very likely to
require reload. The Outlook.pst file containes a lot of information and it
is highly desirable to recover it.

You never copy a file to Outlook's default location. That will not connect
it correctly to Outlook, but will corrupt your profile.

contains an error. It states you can copy the file to Outlook's default
location. That is no longer true because in most instances Outlook will have
already created a PST file in that location that you will overwrite and
corrupt your profile. The article does clearly state that you must connect
to a copied PST file using File > Open > Outlook Data file...
If you did that, you would be fine. Your description does not say you did.
Perhaps you did not post accurately.

Copying direct worked for me. I used Microsoft Help & Support Artical ID
287563 to get my Contacts into my Outlook Address Book. I do not see any
corruption yet. Is there an Microsoft Help & Suport Article on your
method?
I believe there is a need because Vista is easly damaged and very likely
to
require reload. The Outlook.pst file containes a lot of information and
it
is highly desirable to recover it.

Elements, McAfee, etc). This restore is a built in Dell feature.

5. Copied Outlook.pst from Drive G: to C:\user\Bob in
PGI\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook. There was no Outlook.pst file
present
when I copied to the folder.
6. Started Outlook. All my old e-mail & contacts came up OK except the
Outlook Address Book is empty and not accesible.

I have some additional information. I went to Tools/E-mail Accounts
and
added a Personal Address Book. Now when I go to Tools/Address Book,
I
get
&
acknowedge the error message and the Address Book Radio Box now has
4
entries
(Outlook Address Book, Contacts, Contacts & Personel Address Book).
The
new
Contacts has all my contacts in it. I need to eliminate the empty
Contacts
and associate the good Contacts with the Outlook Address Book.

My notes indicate a simular problem when I transfered Outlook to my
former
XP computer. I did fix the problem in a maner simular to the above
information. Except I do not remember all the details.

all
Microsoft Windows software is current. Other programs such as

My procedure worked in conjunction with Microsoft Help & Support Article ID
287563. The saved Outlook.pst file must be installed before Outlook is
initially started. You must close and restart Outlook after completing
Article 287563 Step 2. In step 2, I left the "descriptive name" at the
default "Contacts". I asume that if you had an achive.pst file, you would
save and installed in a similar manner.

You're welcome. No one gets this right by relying on their instincts or the
Help files. Microsoft has made migrating Outlook data an exercise in
counterintuitive futility. They will neither admit nor remedy the problem,
and it gets worse with each successive version. Just my opinion, of course.

is highly desirable to recover it.

You never copy a file to Outlook's default location. That will not
connect
it correctly to Outlook, but will corrupt your profile.
You copy it to any other location, then open it in Outlook: File >
Open >
Outlook data file.

1. Final shutdown Outlook.
2. Saved Outlook.pst to G Drive.
3. Formated C: and restored the Dell as shipped software (Vista,
Adobe
Elements, McAfee, etc). This restore is a built in Dell feature.
4. Installed Office Professional 2003 from my CD.
5. Copied Outlook.pst from Drive G: to C:\user\Bob in
PGI\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook. There was no Outlook.pst
file
present
when I copied to the folder.
6. Started Outlook. All my old e-mail & contacts came up OK
except
the
Outlook Address Book is empty and not accesible.

I am looking at Microsoft Help & Support Artical ID 287563
"Contact
Information does not appear in the address book in Outlook". I
will
try
to
follow their instructions.

I was trying to answer your question. I guess I did not
understand
what
you
wanted.

I have some additional information. I went to Tools/E-mail
Accounts
and
added a Personal Address Book. Now when I go to Tools/Address
Book,
I
get
&
acknowedge the error message and the Address Book Radio Box
now
has
4
entries
(Outlook Address Book, Contacts, Contacts & Personel Address
Book).
The
new
Contacts has all my contacts in it. I need to eliminate the
empty
Contacts
and associate the good Contacts with the Outlook Address Book.

My notes indicate a simular problem when I transfered Outlook
to
my
former
XP computer. I did fix the problem in a maner simular to the
above
information. Except I do not remember all the details.

I formatted C:, loaded Microsoft Office Professional 2003,
Loaded
the
Outlook.pst file that I had saved before formatting C; &
started
Outlook.
Outlook came up with all my e-mail (inbox & sent items) as
they
were
before I
formated C: Outlook Contacts Folder has all my contacts as
they
were
before
I formated C: I am receiving and sending e-mail OK.

Of course there were many other programs and files to
restore.

Outlook Address Book Will Not Open
After Format C and Reload As Shipped Software

Background:
I have 32 bit Microsoft Vista Ultimate. It is running
on a
Dell
XPS420
with
Q6600, 2.4GHZ quad processor that I purchased in
December
2007.
I
have
4
GB
@ 667 MHZ of memory (3.3 GB usable). I have a 256 MB ATI
HD
2600
graphics
card. I have a Dell Ultrasharp 22 inch monitor (1680 x
1050
pixels).
I
use
McAfee VirusScan Plus. I have Office Professional 2003
and
use
Outlook
for
e-mail. Microsoft Works 8.5 and Adobe Photoshop
Elements
6.0
came
with
the
computer. I have 2 Optical drives E: & F: a 320 GB SATA
hard
drive
C:
&
D:
and a 250 GB SATA hard drive G: for backup. Microsoft
update
is
auto
and
all
Microsoft Windows software is current. Other programs
such
as
McAfee
VirusScan, Windows Defender etc. are up to date.
Problem:

I had to format C and reload the Dell as shipped
software
because
Vista
was
damaged and could not be repaired. I saved the
Outlook.pst
file
and
loaded
it after I reloaded Microsoft Office. I have all my old
e-mail.
I
can
see
my Contacts in the Contacts Folder but when I select To:
I
get
the
following
error message: I get the same error message when I
select
Tool/Address
Book:

The address list (book ?) could not be displayed. The
contacts
folder
associated with this address list (book ?) could not be
opened.
It
may
have
been moved or deleted or you do not have permissions.
